The Crowned Clown (2019)
The Crowned Clown (왕이 된 남자, Wang-i Doen Namja, literally "The Man Who Became King") is a 2019 South Korean series starring Yeo Jin-goo, Kim Sang-kyung and Lee Se-young. It's a remake of the film Masquerade (2012). To avoid assassination attempts on King Gwanghae, Ha-seon, a clown who looks exactly like the king, is forced to pretend to be him.

The Crowned Clown has been a thoroughly entertaining and well written series. Split across 16 episodes, this does make for quite the time sink but the journey itself is well worth taking. It'll be a tough Korean drama to beat this year too and it's a shame more people won't get the chance to experience this one. Rich in history and full.

"The Crowned Clown" is a great historical drama in so many ways. Don't think of it as just a Korean version of "The Prince and the Pauper". It has an excellent cast, an intriguing story, and is visually beautiful, but this is the kind of sageuk that I think you have to be in the mood for, and for me, the slow deliberate pace made me a little less excited as a viewer.
